1960 USS Bonhomme Richard CVA-31 Penguin Lighter - U.S. Navy
This vintage lighter was acquired by a crew member of the USS Bonhomme Richard in 1960, but never used. The cloisonne enamel medallion on the front of the silver metal case shows the original Revolutionary War era sailing ship by the same name, with golden wings. The famous words of John Paul Jones, “I have not yet begun to fight” are in a banner around the top of the medallion and under the ship on another banner it reads, “Don’t tread on me.” Beneath that is the name and number of the ship. The lighter’s wick is still white, and the striking wheel turns. On the bottom of the lighter is the brand information and maker’s mark.
Measures 1-3/8 × 2-1/4 inches.
