This extraordinary Art Deco evening bag is from the 1922 Whiting & Davis “Princess Mary” line, which featured a fold-over flap closure. This diminutive example is made of very fine chain mail mesh, in the multi-hued “Sunset” colorway. The paperclip chain of the bag is attached to a Byzantine chain wrist strap that adjusts to fit the wearer. Originally, this small bag was paired with an identical bag in a larger size as part of a “double slider.” The two were connected on each end of the Byzantine chain wrist strap. The frame and strap are pale gold-tone. The chain mail mesh is silver, gold, and russet, in vertical stripes. The bottom of the bag is a zigzag shape, with fine chain fringe. The flap is also fringed. It is marked WHITING AND DAVIS CO. BAGS REG. U.S.
Measures 4-1/2 inches long, including fringe, and 2-1/4 inches wide. Wrist strap would measure approximately 12 inches long if fully extended.
