This beautiful wax sculpture is based on the terracotta original by artist Jean-Antoine Houdon, which resides in the Louvre. This wax reproduction of that original was created by Maison Trudon, the reknowned French candlemaker established in 1643.
The original sculpture represents Louise Brongniart, the daughter of famous architect Alexandre-Theodore Brongniart (1739-1813). The sculptor was considered the most brilliant portraitist of the 18th century. The portraits of the two Brongniart children, Louise and Alexandre, were creaed in 1777 and are said to express both strength and tenderness, demonstrating the artist’s passion for the theme of childhood.
The pink wax sculpture was made using traditional methods and was hand-crafted in Normandy. The delicacy and detail of the face, body, and hair are truly remarkable. Like all Trudon busts, it is adorned with a wick to pay tribute to the primary function of a candle. It was never meant to be burned however, but simply collected and enjoyed. Included with the sculpture is the original brochure describing its history.
Measures 8-3/4 inches tall.
Excellent vintage condition.
