Vintage Javanese Fossilized Stegodon Mammoth Bone Bead Necklace

$375.00

This gorgeous necklace was created by Indonesian artist Devi Tana Hariman in the 1980s. The graduated hollow metal beads are gilded brass inspired by the ancient jewelry of Java. The central element is also gilded brass. The large beads are made from the fossilized bones of stegodons, relatives of ancient mastodons, and are 1.9 million years old. These fossils are mined in the Solo River region of Java. The graduated stegodon beads range from 10 to 23 mm. in diameter. The necklace is unused, in the artist’s batik-print box, just as it was purchased by members of the U.S. diplomatic corps in Jakarta in 1989.

Necklace length is 25-1/2 inches. The central element measures 1-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches.
