Vintage Iraqi Marsh Arab 800 Silver Niello Bracelet
Sometimes known as “Amara work,” this bracelet dates to between 1920 and 1940. Doubtless purchased as a tourist item in Iraq, it is composed of 8 silver panels, each decorated in niello. The scenes show Marsh Arab motifs and reference the people native to the lands between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, reflecting their unique culture. Included among these images are palm trees, reed boats, the Lion of Babylon, camels, homes, and mosques. The panels are connected by rings, all of which are intact and original. The clasp is particularly well crafted. The edge of one panel slides smoothly and discretely into the side of the adjoining panel. When linked, this clasp is nearly invisible. The silver tests as 800 purity.
Measures 7-1/4 inches long and ¾ inch wide. Weight is 28 grams, or 1 ounce.
Excellent vintage condition. Normal patina of vintage silver has been left undisturbed.
