Tall 14" Kokeshi Shingata Omiyage or Sendai Style Doll - Scenes of Kyoto

$115.00

This tall turned wood kokeshi doll dates to the last quarter of the 20th century. The style of construction identifies it as the Shingata omiyage or Sendai style, as it is constructed in 3 sections. The head and neck are carved as one unit, which rotates on the column beneath it. That section is also separate from the rest of the body, and also rotates. The largest portion of the turned wood column has two belts of black that separate the different scenes. The woman’s expression is serene, with black eyes, gray eyebrows, a white nose, and tiny pink lips. Her hair is decorated with large, exuberant white bows. Beautiful landscapes, a woman wearing a kimono, and fall leaves are brush-painted in ink. White paint accents and details finish the piece. The word Kyoto is painted beside the scene of the bridge at the bottom of the doll. The base is marked JAPAN.

Measures 14 inches tall.

Excellent vintage condition.
