Surrealistic Sterling & 14K Face Brooch
This very unusual artisan-made brooch depicts a face in profile. The face is made of matte-finish sterling silver, with curling tendrils of 14K gold framing and accenting the face. The repousse’ features are in fine relief, with naturalistic contours of cheek, forehead, eye, chin, nose, and lips. The eye and lips are plated in gold. Applied safety clasp holds well. This remarkable brooch is unsigned and unmarked, but the materials have been tested. It is reminiscent of the work of Carol Stewart, an artist who sold her jewelry at Seattle’s Pike Place Market in the 1980s to 1990s, This piece was found in an estate that also included one of Stewart’s confirmed brooches. Stewart did not sign her work.
Measures 1-1/4 × 1-3/4 inches. Weighs 7 grams.
Excellent vintage condition. Normal patina of vintage silver has been left undisturbed.
