Norwegian Modernist Brutalist Sterling Thulite Statement Brooch - Knut Paulsen

$395.00

This outstanding brooch was created between 1968 and 1974. It represents the purest expression of Nordic Brutalist style, with deeply sculpted contouring, a textured surface, bold lines, and a rosy pink thulite cabochon collet-set in a deep collar. The flowing surface represents water, ice, and sky. Thulite is the national stone of Norway. Knut Paulsen is best known for his bronze jewelry, but he saved his finest work for the rare pieces he created in sterling silver. This is a large, weighty piece, both in size and in emotional impact. The smooth cabochon juxtaposed to the irregular texture of the silver was a popular statement by artists of this era, intended to highlight contrast and duality. The hand-crafted spiral clasp holds securely. The mark is difficult to make out, but reads DESIGN KNUT P. S925. This is a very special brooch that will be at home with any serious collector of Midcentury Scandinavian Brutalist jewelry.

Measures 1-3/4 × 2 inches. Weighs 30 grams, or 1.1 ounces.

Excellent vintage condition. Normal patina of vintage silver has been left undisturbed.
