Navajo Bennie Ration Sterling & Turquoise Turtle Shadowbox Brooch or Pendant
The craftsmanship in this handmade sterling brooch is outstanding. It is in the form of a turtle carrying a turquoise cabochon on its back. The top shell of the turtle has been cut out in a thunderbird motif. The turtle’s feet, tail and eyes are charming. Because the brooch is so dimensional, the turtle seems to be walking along, its body elevated on its feet above the ground. Close inspection reveals the multi-layered details of its construction. Safety clasp holds well and an additional hook on the back of the turtle’s head allows it to also be used as a pendant or pearl enhancer. Marked STERLING and with the bird of prey talon mark used by Navajo master silversmith Bennie Ration.
Measures 1 -1/4 × 1-5/8 inches and rises ½ inch proud to the top of the turquoise stone. Weighs 15 grams, or 0.6 ounce.
Excellent vintage condition. Light patina or vintage silver has been left undisturbed.
