This extraordinary blown glass ashtray dates to the 1960s. A red glass core is encased in luminous translucent turquoise blue, in a highly precise technique known as incalmo. The blue glass was then plunged into cold water when still hot, causing the glass to fracture, then reheated to seal and smooth the outer surface. The effect is startling rich, dynamic, and intriguing. The top and bottom are beautifully finished. This is a heavy, substantial piece that fully embodies classic Midcentury Italian modern design. Although unsigned, it is clearly the creation of a master glassmaker.
Measures 7 × 5-1/2 inches, and is 2-1/2 inches tall. Weighs 3 pounds, 9 ounces.
Excellent vintage condition.
