This extraordinary necklace was created in the 1970s, soon after gaspeite was discovered in Canada and introduced into jewelry-making. The beautiful natural apple-green stone has rich golden-brown matrix. It has been delicately carved into leaf shapes which are arranged in pairs on 26 stations articulated stations, 13 on each side of the oval brutalist central element. The gaspeite links transition seamlessly to a chain of hand-made 2.5 mm. sterling beads strung on fine silver chain, then terminate in hand-made cones. The simple hook clasp is hand-made, as well. Both the front and the back of this outstanding unsigned necklace show the distinct tool marks and structural variations of authentic bench-crafted jewelry. There is no mark for a maker or for silver purity, though it tests as sterling. The design elements that combine Southwest style with Modernist design and Brutalist aesthetic are quite remarkable.
Measures 3/4 inch wide and 18 inches long. Central element measures 1/2 × 7/8 inch in diameter.
Excellent vintage condition. Normal patina of vintage silver has been left undisturbed.
