This exquisite vintage mid-century modern Murano art glass paperweight is elegantly styled in a subtle egg (ovoid) silhouette. It exhibits excellent depth, combining two difficult, traditional Venetian hot-shop techniques into a complex, multi-layered "matrix" design and can be safely attributed, based on design and technique, to the Fratelli Toso workshop. This piece dates to the 1960s. The interior core features a perfectly formed dome composed of dense, geometrically aligned fields of bullicante (controlled bubbles). The bubble columns spiral gracefully upward toward the apex in a flawless concentric grid. The “outer cage” encloses the bubble core with a striking, structural cage of vibrant crimson red latticino filigree ribbons. The coarse lace bands twist in a structured helix pattern, framing the inner bubble fields beautifully. The bottom is flat, ground, and highly polished, providing a crystal-clear secondary window into the inner ribbon design and ensuring it sits beautifully on display. There is a faint, wispy, and translucent furnace carbon/ash swirl trapped entirely within the glass at the very top apex. This is an honest "factory flaw" from the traditional oil- or wood-fired kilns of Murano. Because it loops smoothly in line with the kinetic motion of the red ribbon twist, it presents visually as an organic part of the handmade process rather than a defect.
Measures 3 inches tall and 3 inches diameter at its widest point. Slightly egg-shaped.
