This beautiful white earthenware box has a soft cloud-like gray background beneath the handpainted decoration in black, blue, and gold gilt. The “three friends of winter,” (plum blossoms, bamboo, and pine) are in the foreground, with Mt. Fuji in the distance. These plants represent resilience, longevity, and steadfastness. The lid of the box is domed to represent the peak of Mt. Fuji. The decoration of the box’s front continues upwards to merge with the front of the lid and continue across the top. This is a substantial, sturdy piece that dates to the middle of the Twentieth Century.
Measures 5-1/4 inches square and rises to 3-3/4 inches tall at the peak of the lid.
Excellent vintage condition.
