Vintage Mexican Carved Honey Onyx Aztec Mask Pendant Necklace

$40.00

This dramatic Mexican folk art necklace was made in the 1970s. It features a large, flat, translucent, carved stone pendant representing a stylized Aztec or Mayan warrior mask. The type of stone is variously known as honey onyx, banded agate, or chalcedony. This pendant is suspended on a necklace of carved onyx beads in irregularly shaped short and long cylinders. The color of the stone is a pale greenish honey-yellow. The stone of the pendant is uniform in color, only a few subtle vertical bands of whiter shading. The beads of the necklace are more dramatically banded in taupe and white. The beads of the necklace are individually linked together by hand with silver wire. The authenticity of the design, natural materials used, and the deliberate variation in the beads demonstrating the sill of the artisan all set this necklace apart. Despite its age, it appears to have never been worn, as traces of the original paper label remain on the back of the pendant. This could be easily cleaned away, but has been left for the new owner to decide, as the vintage style paper and glue help to date the piece. The clasp is a simple hand-crafted hook that holds well.

Pendant measures 1-7/8 × 2-5/8 inches. Necklace measures 26 inches long.

Excellent vintage condition, with no chips, cracks, or other damage to stones.
