This extraordinary 10-sided, gold-tone compact has an ornately carved, spectacularly iridescent, mother of pearl carving on its face. This shape, with the inner lid mechanism, was known as the “Queen Convertible.” This carved style is commonly referred to as the “Sweetheart” design. At the center of the carving is a heart, which is surrounded by an inner ring of scrolling foliar shapes and an outer ring of stylized butterflies. The compact has never been used. Inside, the mirror still has the explanatory sticker on the mirror explaining how to release the latch of the inner door that covers the powder well, stating that this is a Stratton patent. The mirror is beveled. There is no powder puff, but under the inner door is the original screen that holds loose powder in place. The back of the case is finely etched with a cross-hatched pattern and marked at the center with Stratton in script and England. This mark is partially covered by the original price tag, which is still firmly affixed. This price tag, for $37.50, identifies the store where it was sold as Nordstrom and includes both printed and handwritten inventory numbers. The ten sides of the case are gently scalloped, giving the entire piece a light, elegant look. There is no damage to the mother of pearl, no scuffing or wear to the golden plating. This is a very special piece for a dedicated collector.
