1950s Navajo Tooled Leather Medicine Bag or Bucket Purse
This exceptional bag was acquired on the Navajo reservation during the 1950s by a nurse who was working there. It has been packed away safely since that time and shows no signs of ever having been used. The tooled cowhide bucket portion is decorated with handcolored tooled Yei dancers, each of them unique. It is a rich caramel color. The figures have blue faces and are dressed in white, red, green, and shades of brown. The top of the bag is made of buttery-soft, rich brown suede. The stitching is black. Cowhide leather thongs are threaded through brass rings to create a drawstring top.
Measures 5 × 6-3/4 inches at the base and 4 inches to the top of the tooled leather portion. Total height to top of suede is 9-1/2 inches.
