1944 Corocraft Sterling "Bill and Coo" Duette Brooch & Clips

$695.00

This remarkable gold-plated sterling Duette features two blue lovebirds standing on a leafy green enameled branch. Their bellies are faceted blue oval glass stones and their wings are paved with white rhinestones. The enameling of the birds’ faces is especially fine, with yellow, black, and red details. The birds are highly sculptural, each with two separate outspread wings. The green enamel branch is accented with clusters of white rhinestones.

Each bird is a separate dress clip, held together on a brooch frame. The safety clasp of the brooch frame holds well and both birds’ clips are tight.

The clip of each bird is marked STERLING and “Bill” also has a plaque reading STERLING CoroCraft with the Pegasus mark. The frame is marked Coro Duette, STERLING, and with the patent number for the Duette mechanism, 1798867. This Duette was first advertised for sale in Mademoiselle magazine in May 1944 with the name “Bill and Coo.” The design patent, 140,014, was awarded to Adolf Katz in January 1945.

The brooch measures 1-3/4 × 2-1/2 inches. Total weight is 35 grams, or 1.2 ounces.

Condition is excellent overall, with no wear or damage to enamel or gold vermeil. No dead rhinestones. Five of the tiny white rhinestones on the berries beneath the branch are missing, but could be easily replaced if desired. These do not detract from the overall appearance or wearability of the piece.
