This is a truly delightful antique box. It is decorated with scrolling forms and lilies, marking a transition between the more formal elements of Victorian decoration and the organic forms of Art Nouveau. Although skillfully worked, this is clearly an amateur, rather than a mass-produced, piece. The box is lined with lovely blue and white patterned paper. inside the lid, a sweet Victorian lithograph of a toddler girl sitting on a fringed rug with her pet bunny has been affixed. The clasp holds well and the hinges are strong and intact. It is perfectly sized for holding handkerchiefs, and that was probably its original intended purpose, but could be used for jewelry, trinkets, or general household storage.
